How would you deal with this lawyer's bill?
I had a post nup agreement written up to protect any inheritance I may receive. My husband and I also have a pre-nump agreement. I know how ridiculous this sounds - why did we bother getting married.
However, after I contacted my lawyer, I found out that inheritances were not considered marital property in a divorce. So I really didn’t need to have this post nump agreement written up. Then, I got a whopping bill for 0 from my lawyer for "consultation" and fees. The consultation was maybe a five minute phone conversation.
I also emailed my lawyer to ask him what protection the post nump provides me beyond basic property rights. He responded and said that my inheritance was protected under property rights and the prenump would have covered it anyway.
What the heck???? So now I owe this guy 0 for an agreement that he didn’t even have to draft? Should I lick my wounds and just pay him or confront him and tell him that he took advantage of my ignorance. He should have counselled me differently and told me that this agreement was not necessary.
0!!!!!!!!

I would have to disagree with the answers you have received here is why… you admit you talked to a lawyer and had a postnup done.. whether it was necessary or not, you agreed for this guy to make a post nup.. you went to the lawyer and agreed to have a postnup done, needless or not the lawyer wrote it up at your say so and now he gets paid for the time and services he offered.
it would be like you going to the auto shop, and while they were changing your starter they stated that you needed a battery.. you agree, and then find out that your battery still had a 80% warranty, you could’ve a new battery cheaper, and the core they gave you back (if you got it back) still had a charge and would start your car for another 6 months to a year.. now you want to sue the auto shop, but you cannot cause needless or not, you agreed to the charges and the service..it’s the same thing
I am agreeing with the answers you have received. A similar situation happened to me when my mom died. I stood my ground. I felt this attorney in particular tried to take advantage of my sister and me. We were quoted one thing then charged a higher amount! We were lucky. We paid what he quoted us to begin with!!!!! Like I said, we stood our ground!
Good luck!
Don’t pay him and tell him why, if he threatens you with court tell him to go ahead, he would look like an idiot in front of the jugde and he knows it. tell him to get lost.
Easy. Send the bill back with a note that said. SERVICE NOT RENDER.
He is just trying to collect and see if you pay…
You didn’t pay for the agreement, you payed for the "consultation."
This guy is obviously a sleezeball, but taking this to court would be ridiculous. You could always call a consumer hotline, preferably one with the media. Maybe they will put some heat on this guy for you.
