How do I go about getting my old files from former attorneys I've used? I need them for a new court case.
I am attempting to show the courts that I have hired 3 attorneys over the course of 5 years to modify child support. Only one of those attorneys ever brought the case to court - THIS YEAR - at which point I was told by the judge that to modify my support would be like rewarding me for not paying.
Before everyone decides to massacre me for being a "deadbeat" there are many, MANY facts you would have to know. Like the fact that I have my child almost 50% of the time & that the father makes a LOT of money, his wife stays at home with NO kids at home & doesn’t work though she has a teaching degree. I am also a stay-at-home mom to 3 kids, 2 of whom are very young.
I need to get my files from the former attorneys who never did anything for me but I want to get them without giving them notice so that they don’t have a chance to take anything from the files.
HOW CAN I DO THAT?

Sadly, your only recourse is to hire another lawyer. Isn’t divorce bliss…Good luck.
I don’t know the particular rules in your state, but they are at least ethically (if not legally) obligated to give you your files (especially if you don’t owe the lawyers any money). If you’re having trouble with them, I would contact the state bar association.
