Hey! I had a question; recently inadventantly threw away all my documentation on my home tutoring business and charitable donations that I had claimed on my tax returns for the last two years. Am almost sick with worry. Am worried that perhaps I should refile 2008 and 2009 returns without these write offs as I would not have a leg to stand on if audited. I am a teacher with a 47,000 year salary and which includes approximately 10,000 claimed per year for home business and approximately 1500.00 per year in charitable donations. Any ideas on the chances of being audited?
Thanks!
Unfortunately, the IRS is getting picky about deductions for charitable donations and they like to see documentation.
One of the red flags for being audited is just that. Don’t worry, if you cannot find them. Just save all the ones
from the future and keep them in a safe place.
Recently found out about Veterans exemption on my property taxes, any recourse for not knowing about this exemption for the past 40 years?
I have a question:
We used our tax preparer, who is also a lawyer, for the first time. He sent instructions via email as to what he needs in order to prepare our 2009 tax. He then sent us the copy of the prepared tax, stating that we will get a small refund from the IRS and pay NY State for less than $100. He didn’t explain why we are getting a small refund and have to pay NY State even if I am unemployed and had a baby last year. A few weeks after, we get this NOTICE from NY State, stating that we have to pay around more than a thousand of tax fees. Can we sue our tax preparer for negligence?
